FriYAY! I hope everyone has a fun weekend planned. I have always suffered from excema and more recently psoriasis (why is that word so hard to spell, thank god for spell checker!) I would always be putting on steroid cream on pretty much a daily basis and in every place on my body you can imagine…I won’t go into detail but honestly, it was everywhere. Needs must. It was more embarrassing not to. But I found out that I was allergic to a few things, one of which is a chemical in quite a few products which need to lather up. Cocomidopropyl Betaine (similar products like Cocoamide DEA and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate are in the list to avoid below) is a foaming agent which is put in soaps. So it was 5 years ago that I started looking at the backs of products to know what I was putting on my skin.
Anyway, what I didn’t realise was that an awful lot of beauty and personal care products such as moisturisers, cleansers, soaps, shampoos, conditioners, makeup and perfumes, that we are using might actually be doing more damage than good! There’s me thinking that all of these things are all designed to make us look and feel our best. Oh those marketing so and so’s making us think the product is going to pull in the boys and live the dream…
Our skin is our biggest organ and it absorbs small amounts of everything we put on it. So soaps, creams and makeup get absorbed into the body. So there’s me thinking I am what I eat, well actually I’m also what I am putting on my skin!
Sod the phrase ‘a moment on your lips, a lifetime on your hips’ it’s ‘a moment on your skin, a lifetime within’ (not strictly true, but it rhymes.)
So knowing that, we could be making sure that we are not rubbing pretty smelling poisons onto our body each day. Luckily we are now so much more aware of the toxic ingredients that are commonly used in many beauty and personal care products and for once the media is actually sending out a good message of warning people about these things.
Totally worth reading the back of your products and look out for some of the more common chemicals, found in everyday products that you want to try and avoid as much as possible:
- Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA)
- Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT)
- Cocomidopropyl Betaine
- DEA, (Cocamide DEA and Lauramide DEA)
- Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP)
- Mineroil oil (a by product of crude oil)
- Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS)
- Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES)
The good news is that many of the cosmetic and personal care companies have adjusted their products or brought out new lines that advertise as being more organic and free from many of these harsh chemicals and you can buy ones which aren’t going to break the bank either.
So if you love your skin products, but want to avoid these nasty chemicals, look out for brands that advertise as being free of these! Because you are worth it!
My recommendation is to use pure, safe and beneficial products. I now only use one brand – I’m a total convert as I now very rarely get excema or psoriasis.
Thanks again for reading, see you next time!
